So, with the clocks about to change this week, the weather definitely becoming cooler and the evenings getting darker we thought we would talk about winter weddings!

Although the winter season is not as busy for us when it comes to wedding catering there are still people who want to marry in these months. There are many benefits and our particular favourite is the rich, warming winter menu we are able to create. You can also welcome your wedding guests with a glass of mulled wine, or if you are wanting a real Devon country wedding then how about a warm punch made with local cider?

Weddings in the winter season can also lend themselves to completely different themes and colours. You can have blues and silver, with snow flakes and crystals….img_6945

or reds and gold for Christmas, how about giving all your wedding guests a personalised cracker as a favour or a masons jar with ingredients for a hot chocolate.

Let’s talk about a winter wedding menu. If you are marrying in the month of December then yes, you can serve roast Devonshire Turkey with all the trimmings and even include Christmas pudding as one of the choices for desserts. If you are marrying in winter you may want to consider a rich, warming beef steak dish made with red wine, mushrooms, tarragon and smoked bacon from our local butcher here in Okehampton. Fillet steak with wild mushrooms and a pepper corn jus or if you are wanting a homemade pie for all your wedding guests to share then how about a game pie made with pheasant, venison, rabbit and pigeon, served with buttery creamed potatoes and a rich gravy. What can be better?

Winter is definitely a season where we as wedding caterers recommend serving hearty, rich foods, due to the wintry weather you can serve this and your guests will love it, trust us! In the evening as the party is getting started and to keep your guests warm how about a hot chocolate station, where your wedding guests can choose from marsh mellows, syrup, flakes and of course whipped cream to “pimp” their hot chocolate.

Instead of a country theme with bunting and log slices why not use pine cones that can be collected for free and used as wedding decorations. There is also Christmas trees and if you like candles and dimmed lighting then a winter wedding in one of Devon’s great wedding venues would not be better lit to create that WOW atmosphere for all your wedding guests to remember.

Finally and one of the main points to wedding planning is the weather! Do not be put off by the winter, we have catered for weddings in the middle of the summer and had continuous rain all day. With a frost on the ground or light fading early, or even snow your photographer will be able to capture some of the best wedding photos especially with a wintry Devon backdrop.
