Before the festive season is over for another year we thought we would write about a beautiful, wintery, rustic wedding that we catered for on Saturday 9th December. We had the great pleasure of returning to Weare Giffard, near Bideford in Devon to cater for the wedding of Maria and Callum.
The couple married at the local church and then returned back to Maria’s family farm to a tipi supplied by www.worldinspiredtents.co.uk which was absolutely stunning with all the fairy lights twinkling and the Christmas decorations shining in their glow. The tipi also came complete with a fire pit that was the show stopper as you opened the large oak doors of the tipi.
Maria’s married name became ‘Birch’ which the couple embraced and used as a theme for their day, with the tables all being named after trees…
…and the table plan for guests being hung on a birch tree.
The tables were dressed with tea lights, twinkling fairy lights, pheasant feathers and pine cones for the guests place cards. Each guest received a gingerbread as a favour, food is always a hit and what could have been more appropriate at this time of year.
On the day, the newlyweds arrived back to the tipi’s with their guests to glasses of warming mulled wine, bottles of beer and orange juice, the mulled wine going down particularly well. Along with drinks we served a selection of homemade canapes which included mini assorted poppadoms with coronation chicken, goats cheese, thyme and red onion tart-lets, miniature Yorkshire puddings with roast beef and creamed horseradish and butchers sausages with a honey and wholegrain mustard glaze.
Before we served the Wedding Breakfast the guests sat to listen to the speeches…
Maria and Callum wanted to have a menu that showed a hint of Christmas but was not all about mince pies and Christmas pudding. With this in mind we served traditional local, roast turkey from Crediton near Exeter. As well as turkey we served a rich beef bourguignon with horseradish dumplings and a mushroom, pine nut, tomato and tarragon filo strudel with Madeira sauce along with plenty of crispy roast potatoes, carrots, braised red cabbage and brussel sprouts.
For the dessert selection we served Caroline’s famous sticky toffee pudding with lashings of toffee sauce, a lemon panna cotta with a shortbread biscuit and finally an Oaktree pavlova with an apple, blackberry and pear compote, all served with clotted cream. To finish the meal we served homemade chocolate truffles and mints along with fresh filter coffee and tea.
In the evening we opened a hot chocolate station complete with cream, marshmellows, chocolate, cinnamon and sugar canes for the guests to enjoy. After Maria and Callum cut their wedding cake which was made by a guest at the wedding and which looked amazing, the couple had their first dance.
To finish the day, we served a cold buffet of home cooked honey glazed ham, roast breast of Devon turkey, along with vegetable quiches…
…hot potatoes and a selection of salads, finished with edible flowers and artisan breads. To finish of the day we left a cheese board for guests to nibble to their hearts content.
This was a really beautiful wedding that suited the time of year perfectly and one that we will not forget. It was lovely to see so many Oaktree friends and to meet some new suppliers, photographer Will Reddaway.
Thank you Mr and Mrs Birch for letting us be a part of your special day and we wish you all the very best for your future together.
