Who doesn’t love a pie! Jo’s favourite is Chicken, Bacon and Mushroom, Caroline’s would have to be Steak and Ale with shortcrust pastry, made with the finest Devon beef.

Our customers here at Oaktree Occasions also seem to love a pie, its become a popular menu request here for wedding catering and even a corporate dinner. We can pretty much make any type you like and in any size. A pie is a surprisingly well received option for the wedding fayre menu, we have all been to weddings where you are just about eating your hand off with hunger, and you need something to soak up all that Pimm’s, with hotels offering pretty much the same type of menus in the merry go round of unexciting wedding catering, something hearty, home made and full of flavour is a refreshing change, we can add your initials too for the extra special personal touch.

We can make pies to share, large ones placed in the middle and cut up and shared, or individual ones so you can enjoy it all to yourself.

The filling is yours to choose, the old favourites are the most popular, Chicken and Leek, Chicken and Mushroom, Steak and Ale, Steak and Guinness, but how about Steak and Stilton or Game Pie in the Winter, and the vegetarian pie choice is endless…our favourite of the moment is Butternut Squash, Stilton and Pecan Nut..surprisingly delicious! With our hand cut Chuck Steak coming from here in Okehampton and the best Chicken from Crediton, locality is assured.

As for the pastry..it has to be shortcrust..made to Caroline’s secret recipe but if you wanted a lighter offering Filo pastry is a good alternative, especially for the ladies who may want something lighter, Steak and Kidney works well with a Suet Pastry but you may need a lie down after one of those!

A pie is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as”A baked dish of fruit, meat or vegetables, typically with a top and base of pastry” which we fully endorse, it has to have pasty all the way round else its a casserole, with a pastry lid surely! In the 16th century ” surprise pies” where live animals would jump out were popular among the upper classes, frogs, squirrels you name it, thank goodness those days are over…

So whatever type of pie is your favourite, have a great National Pie Week! And don’t forget to get in touch to see what type of pie we can make for you…
